Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • MS1 - The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • MS2 - The text is preferentially single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end. T. Line numbers are included in the document. The text in the MitoFit Preprints format is accepted and welcome.
  • MS3 - The submission adheres to SI units and IUPAC recommendations. MitoEAGLE recommendations on terms and symbols are implemented.
  • MS4 - Institutional addresses are listed for all coauthors, as well as an email address for the corresponding author.
  • MS5 - The experimental work has been performed in accordance with the ethical standards for research particularly when using humans or animals. Mandatory ethics approvals are fully reported.
  • MS6 - Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • MS7 - Author contributions are explained in a separate section.
  • MS8 - Any conflicts of interest have been declared.
  • MS9 - Where possible, raw data has been deposited in a stable and recognised open repository under a CC0 license and the DOI(s) and/or accession number(s) are included in the specific section of the manuscript. Alternatively, it is stated that raw data is available on request, or an explanation of why this is not possible is included in the comments to the editor.
  • S1 - The manuscript submitted for peer review at BEC is available Open Access either (1) posted at MitoFit Preprints, or (2) in a different preprint server. Please specify in the text field “Comments for the Editor” whether the manuscript should be posted as MitoFit Preprint at the same time of the submission to BEC.
  • S2 - The manuscript has not been previously published, nor is it currently submitted to another journal.
  • S3 - The corresponding author has received written consent from all authors, who agree to take responsibility for the content of the manuscript.
  • S4 - The corresponding author has received written consent by all persons mentioned in the acknowledgments.
  • S5 - E-mail addresses for all coauthors are listed in the submission registration.
  • S6 - The authors agree with the open and published peer-review process.

Author Guidelines

Manuscript format

  • Manuscripts in English - perhaps you want to check out the free Grammarly
  • Include line numbers in the Word document

« BEC formats

  • Publications in Bioenergetics Communications include a title, authors and affiliations, author contributions, an introduction (presenting the purpose of the publication), materials and methods, results, a discussion or conclusions, references, and acknowledgements. However, it is not necessary to follow a fixed format, g., the authors may choose to place the materials and methods section before the results or at the end before the references, and the discussion section can be separated from the results, or both sections can be merged. Thus authors can focus on the quality of their work instead of following the stereotype of a journal format.
  • The publications are accompanied by a folder with the original data (g. DLD files with the raw data).
  • Manuscripts must adhere to SI units and IUPAC recommendations. MitoEAGLE recommendations on terms and symbols are to be implemented.

Submission

  • For conduct and reporting recommendations, authors should follow the Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing, and Publication of Scholarly Work in Medical Journals' by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) (see The Vancouver Protocol).
  • The manuscript submitted at BEC should be available Open Access posted as a preprint, with the possibility of sending it to the MitoFit Preprint Archives at the time of BEC submission.
  • Authors submit the manuscript to BEC Open Peer Review. By submitting the manuscript, the corresponding author declares (1) responsibility for the content, (2) consent of all co-authors, (3) having performed the experimental work in accordance with the ethical standards for research particularly when using humans or animals, and (4) appropriate declarations of conflicts of interest. The authors will also suggest one or two Associate Editors and three reviewers, avoiding any conflict of interest.

Living Communications

From preprint to publication

  • The preprint is part of a stepwise process:
  1. MitoFit Preprint Archives is the fast lane of Open Access communication without peer review. Authors should indicate if the submission to Bioenergetics Communications shall be published as a preprint in the MitoFit Preprint Archives.
  2. The manuscript is immediately delegated to our Associate Editors or Section Editors and checked for suitability for publishing in both MitoFit preprint and Bioenergetics Communications
  3. Communication with the authors to plan the non-anonymous Open Peer Review with authors suggesting up to three reviewers.

BEC versions

» For details see: Living Communications

Open Peer Review

From MitoFit Preprint to Open Peer Review is standard for BEC. We accept an opt out option from an author when presented with a reasonable explanation. Further clarification may be requested. The editorial board may choose not to accept the explanation and potentially reject the manuscript (not the preprint).
